Song 4 – “City of Angels”

With the title “City of Angels,” you might think this

song captures the beauty and highlights of Los

Angeles. I took the ironic approach, and decided

to cover some of the darker themes of Los Angeles.

Just to clarify, I don’t want to come off as if I’m bashing

L.A., because these themes and issues can be true of

any city. I also don’t want people to think the darkness

is “out there” somewhere in the city, but the darkness

spreads to you and me. It’s in all of us. We might think

our bodies are cities of angels, but when I look into the

heart of my city, I’m no angel.

The verses of this song point out the dark aspects of

L.A., but the chorus starts out affirming the “City of Angels”

slogan. The last line of the chorus ends with a hint of doubt

that maybe L.A. isn’t what he thought it was. Maybe it’s not

the “City of Angels.”

Song 3 – “Los Angeles II”

This song is a bit of a continuation from the last one.

The individual is trying to deal with love, and trying

to deal with the implications of sacrificial love. Each

line starts with a question, and then makes a statement

based off his question. These questions reveal the man’s

doubts and fears of trying to love someone, and being loved

by someone. He knows his weaknesses and short comings,

and wonders if they will be too much, and will hinder him

from ever being loved.

It’s the fear we all have to some degree. We don’t want to

die alone, and go through this life without the love of at least

one person. It’s also the longing of being known, but also the

fear of being known. Will the other person use this knowledge

for my good or for their gain? Will this person be scared away,

or will they stay anyway?

It’s a song of questions, doubts, longings, inner agony, and

living through the unknown. Musically it’s repetitive and goes

in cycles. I don’t think I did this intentionally but maybe

subconsciously. This is totally how my brain works when I’m

looking for answers or struggling with doubts and fears. It’s

an endless cycle causing me to lose sleep and lose track of

reality. I get swept away in the monotonous cycle of questions

wondering when it will cease.

Song 2 – “Los Angeles I”

My hope for writing about these tracks is to give the average listener

a peek behind the curtain, but not to tear the whole curtain down. I’m

a detail-oriented person by nature, so I’ll try to change my ways for this

post.

Is there a building in your town that you go past regularly, and you think

to yourself, “What a dump! How is that business still surviving?” Every

time you drive by it, the same thoughts come to mind. After many months

or even years, you cave in and decide to check it out. Once you step foot

inside, your bitter thoughts vanish, and turn to regret. You wish you would

have gone in earlier. It’s great! What a diamond in the rough!

Or maybe you experienced the opposite, where you thought something

was going to be gem, and it turned out to be a bag of coal.

Relationships can be the same way. You meet someone and gather your

first impressions. Those impressions expand and change over the next few

months, and after years of knowing that person those impressions will be

confirmed or repealed. Those impressions have been transformed along the

way into character traits, at least in your mind.

If the other person knows themselves at all, they know the highs and lows

of their character. With technology and the way relationships are managed

these days, we can easily leave people in the “impression zone” for a much

longer period of time before texting and social media came along. We’ve all

been informally trained in PR, marketing, sales, and photoshop. Our best

foot is always forward, and our blemishes have been clicked away with the

healing tool.

What happens if we slip? What happens if we face plant it, and we miss a

spot? How will people respond with the ugly truth of who we are? Will they cast

us out? Will we continue to be friends, dating, or whatever the relationship

may be? We’re going to have to end the relationship. Won’t we?

This is romantic love. The idealized kind of love we read about and see in the

movies. The kind where you feel good all the time. What if love is hard though?

What if we disagree more than we delight? How can love continue?

I would argue that these are the times when love is truly shown. It’s

not hard to love someone when they make you laugh, give you gifts, are easy

to talk to, and always see eye-to-eye. You can easily say, “I love you.” Do you

really love them, or do you just love the feeling you get from being around them?

The way to know if you truly love them, is how you react and deal with the hard

times. Do you still treat them with kindness and respect? Do you still serve them

and talk to them? Do you make attempts to right wrongs and see eye-to-eye?

That’s love.

I didn’t quote any lyrics or mention anything from the song, which might make

you think I didn’t explain the song at all. I did, I swear. I simply expounded on

the themes and thoughts that inspired the song. There’s your peak behind the

curtain. It was more of a long gaze, but I’m fine with it. I hope you are too.

Song 1 – “Lost Angeles”

The first track on the EP is titled “Lost Angeles.” It acts as

an intro, and helps set the stage a bit. Since this EP is meant

to be a cohesive project and to stream together, it seemed fitting

to give an introduction. If you come into this EP not knowing the

first track is an introduction, you might think I’m a shut-in without

electricity, because the first line is, “Los Angeles, where are you?”

The next line is similar to the first, and these lines appear a bit

code-like. As the song continues the key is given to crack the code

of the first two lines, and ultimately the rest of the EP. You’ll see

what I’m saying once you listen. It’s still a bit mysterious for everyone

else at this point.

This EP has been a long time coming. I wrote it back

track listing.

  1. Lost Angeles
  2. Los Angeles I
  3. Los Angeles II
  4. City of Angels
  5. Boss Angeles
  6. LAX

I hope to post more about the EP as the release date

draws nearer.

A Few New Things

As you probably noticed, my Kickstarter campaign was unsuccessful.

We’re still rehearsing and trying to prepare to record, and I’m trying to

brainstorm ways to raise money.

My wife and I moved into our house just over a week ago. We’re trying

to get settled, and make it feel like our home. It still doesn’t feel like home

yet, but I’m glad to be back in Fountain Square.

The “LA” EP is still being finalized. We’ve been busy and have upgraded

some of our software, but we’re about 90-95% finished.

That’s just a quick update on somethings that have been happening lately.

I’ll try to post more frequently, but things have been a little crazy.

Kickstarter Campaign

We’re about halfway through my Kickstarter campaign.

I haven’t promoted it too much, because I don’t want to

bog people down or feel pushy. As time draws near, I’m

getting more and more worried and more and more desperate.

I’m not a huge fan of asking people to donate their hard-earned

money towards my own goals. On the other hand, I do feel

passionate about this album and its individual tracks. I wish I

could show people snippets of these songs, but we can’t start

recording until we reach our goal. It’s a bit of a catch 22 at this

point.

I will say that I’ve been honing my skills and ears for tone and quality

over the last couple years. We’re also working with The Lodge Studio

in Indianapolis, IN. Michael, the owner of The Lodge, has been a sound

engineer for over 30 years and has worked with artists such as Bela Fleck,

Gavin DeGraw, John Legend, Jack Johnson, Pink, Weezer and many more.

He worked out in L.A. before moving to Indy. I can’t wait to have his expertise

on this album. Please consider being part of this album financially, but please

do so quickly since time is running out. Thank you.

Blast Off

Well folks, it’s official. I launched my first Kickstarter campaign this morning.

It’s a scary thing to ask for help, especially when it’s financial help. It feels

weird and no one likes to do it. At the same time, it’s wonderful to be part of

a community. To share in the excitement and to press towards a common goal.

My hope is that I’ll meet my goal, but I also hope people can get excited with me.

Ways to help meet this goal is by giving financially. Another way is to spread the

word, and with social media nowadays, it’s not too hard. Another way to be part

of this journey is to invest in it by the ways listed above, but also by staying up-

to-date with the project.

Ways to do that are by following my blog updates,

Kickstarter updates, following my band page on Facebook, following on Twitter,

following on Instagram, and dialogue. Feel free to contact me at my email:

raywyattmusic@gmail.com. Feel free to ask questions, leave feedback, or just

say hello. I’d love to hear from you.

July Update

The “LA” EP is one step closer to being finished and being in your ears.

I received the first rough mix from my sound engineer, and honestly I

haven’t heard these songs for a few weeks. When I listened to it, I felt

as if it was a first listen for me. I tried to approach it as if I had never heard

these songs before, and tried to hear it as you would hear it. I might post

some thoughts once I release it on how I would like you to approach these

songs; similar to an artist statement.

A tentative release date for the EP will be mid to late August. Stay tuned.

I’ll try to keep sending out updates as things progress.

The Big Hook

It’s a little late in the contest, so vote quickly

online. There are two videos: one and two.

Please “like” your favorite. Thanks everyone!

i think the official voting is on this page. I’m at

the bottom since I just entered and have no votes.

Let’s change that 🙂
